RARE GLOBAL VILLAGE PROGRAMME

Chris Coombs has unearthed a copy of a 4 page programme of Wakefield's first Free Concert, held in August 1969.
It was Bill Nelson's idea and was organised by and starred the original Global Village.

Below the four pages of the leaflet are reproduced with additional comments.

There were photographs of the event too - one is shown following the leaflet!!

Enjoy!

The front cover in true '70's style. Bill drew all the artwork. It says : "Free Concert / July 26th / Clarence Park".

Clarence Park is one of three Wakefield parks which all run into each other :
Thornes Park and Clarence Park are two of them.
The Bandstand where the concert was held is still there in Clarence Park.

Page 2 of the programme with the artists appearing.
I think "Buffalo Canvas" was a group formed especially for the occasion,
see Page Three for some details of this.

Matrin Foye was a photographer friend of Bill's and also a drummer.
He can be seen in the photo following.

(Sadly Martin has died recently).

Chris Coombs (with his name spelled wrongly) was also to sing
as lead singer with Global Village for a short while.

Recorded live by HOLYGROUND!!
Shortly after this Mike had a break-in and several tapes were stolen
- did it include these? Who can tell - sadly such was the relative cost of tape
and Mike's personal finances that many tapes were re-used.
Nothing of these recordings remains, other than the photographs!!

The back cover  - with Bill's "signature" - "Folder by Bill Nelson".

Below is one of three photographs from the concert.

some people : (left to right)  - just out of sight far left would be BRYAN HOLDEN, drummer.

On bass guitar and vocals,  AL QUINN.

Just in front of him walking towards the camera is DAVE WOOD who set up HOLYGROUND with MIKE LEVON.
He is not happy at the police instruction for everyone to leave the stage, see far right. ( . . . "far right ". . . - good one that!) It had started to rain and several of the audience, including a lot of children had taken shelter on stage!

On stage next to AL is BILL NELSON - what a cool fringed jacket, Bill!!

Last but one on the far left of the stage, wearing a black top
and talking to a man in a white top, is MARTIN FOYE, compere.

You can just make out a poster pinned to the front of the stage - next to the umbrella - which says "Holyground - Recording Live". Mike painted this in Preston when he visited to meet THUNDERMOTHER early in the year.
