MIKE SHEARING formerly known as Mick
Mike was a member of the Preston band "Jerusalem Smith" and came to Holyground with Thundermother in 1970. Jerusalem Smith played their final gig on the 31st December 1969 at Preston Public hall as a support band to Slade as top of the bill. Mike came across the Holyground site and found himself looking at a photo of Thundermother's Dave Millen, and of himself!
Mike Shearing writes : The photo, of which I never knew existed, of Dave playing with a member of “Jerusalem Smith” on bass was me! That is Fred Kelly’s furry jacket at the side. (Fred was Thundermother's drummer).
And I still cannot believe it’s true . I remember some of that weekend - I had to in places as I was the guy that provided the transport! But there was no bass amp! I used to borrow one off a guy and drop him half of my gig money I think his name was Coe could have been Alan.
I remember Fred Kelly well we did play quite a bit together I liked his strong style of playing. Fred fitted in somewhere between The Suspects and Jerusalem Smith but its now a bit hazy. He then went off with Claudia Rogers backing band . . . and probably with her!
If I remember the photo must have been taken while playing Rock me Babe as I do remember doing that with him and as far as I know it was a practise and not laid down. The photo says 'recording 'Woman' - I couldn’t play the bass part to that.
I have always known and was totally blown away how he (and now I know you) laid that Woman track down I do remember that and listening to it afterwards as it progressed. Playing with Dave was to me the ultimate and I have always thought him to be one of the best ever.
