Holyground Records - one of the most collectable labels in the world

MARTIN SNELL

Martin Snell came with the Jumble Lane people, and was one of the small group who formed the backbone of that album. Like many others, the Holyground cross fertilisation process soon had him involved in other projects, notably a Chris Coombs' track on Astral Navigations: Tomorrow (Buffalo).

Martin writes : I remember most the 48 or so takes of Ric Jerrom singing "Rock Me Baby" for the album.

He was so gentle when he started the first session. I have vivid memories of Liam Arthurs telling him to "PUT some B--ls into it", and by the 40th take his original folk like voice was unrecognizable and he sang more like Joe Cocker.
There was also a track which Steve Channing played on painstakingly and it never got switched through on the final mix.*

They were good days and I also remember the instant we knew that there would never be a record cover with the photos that we had painstakingly posed for, because the cleaners had stashed all the covers together in the Art room and the ink had smudged.

Consequently "Jumble Lane" came out as a shiny album in a plain white cover.

The keyboard tracks were fun to do and i can't believe how basic my improv skills were in those days I'm pleased that 37 years later most of those guys are still rocking including ME!

* This was "Rock Me Babe".
